Fatty Liver Disease

Condition · Hepatology Treatment

Fatty Liver Disease occurs when excess fat builds up in liver cells, and is increasingly common alongside rising rates of obesity and diabetes.

In its early stages, fatty liver disease often causes no noticeable symptoms — but left unaddressed, it can progress to inflammation, scarring and, over time, more serious liver damage.

Dr. Nair evaluates liver enzymes, imaging and metabolic risk factors to assess severity, and builds a management plan centred on the changes shown to make the biggest difference.

Common Symptoms

  • Often no symptoms in early stages
  • Fatigue
  • Mild discomfort in the upper right abdomen
  • An enlarged liver on examination

Risk Factors

  • Obesity and excess body fat
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Sedentary lifestyle

Dr. Nair's Approach

Management is primarily lifestyle-focused — weight management, dietary change and addressing related metabolic conditions — paired with regular monitoring of liver enzymes and imaging to track progress over time.
