GERD Treatment

Condition · Gastroenterology

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a chronic condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus.

Occasional heartburn is common, but when acid reflux becomes frequent or severe, it can damage the esophageal lining and affect daily life — this is GERD.

Dr. Nair evaluates the frequency, severity and any warning signs before recommending treatment, using upper GI endoscopy where needed to check for complications such as esophagitis.

Common Symptoms

  • Frequent heartburn, especially after meals or at night
  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
  • Chest discomfort
  • Difficulty or pain while swallowing
  • Chronic cough or hoarseness

Causes & Risk Factors

  • A weakened lower esophageal sphincter
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Certain foods, caffeine and late-night eating

Dr. Nair's Approach

Treatment typically combines lifestyle and dietary changes with acid-suppressing medication. For persistent or severe symptoms, endoscopic evaluation helps rule out complications and guides a longer-term management plan.
