Gallstones Treatment

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder and can cause pain when they block the flow of bile.

Many gallstones cause no symptoms and are found incidentally, but when a stone blocks a duct, it can trigger sudden, significant pain and, in some cases, complications such as pancreatitis or infection.

Dr. Nair evaluates gallstone-related symptoms with imaging and, where a stone has moved into the bile duct, performs therapeutic ERCP to clear the blockage — coordinating with surgical teams when gallbladder removal is required.

Common Symptoms

• Sudden, intense pain in the upper right abdomen
• Pain radiating to the back or right shoulder
• Nausea and vomiting
• Symptoms often triggered after a fatty meal

Risk Factors

• Obesity and high-fat diet
• Rapid weight loss
• Family history of gallstones
• Certain metabolic conditions

Dr. Nair's Approach

Diagnosis is confirmed with ultrasound imaging. When a gallstone has moved into the bile duct, ERCP is used to locate and remove it endoscopically, relieving the blockage and reducing the risk of further complications.
